A house of cards made from snow and ice as well as an exotic palace taking inspiration from Casablanca, and a cherry tree made to last all winter by the British brothers Henry and Hugh Miller, are just a few of the amazing designs that guests will encounter at Sweden’s famous ICEHOTEL based in Jukkasjärvi, Northern Sweden this winter.
Also in this year’s specially designed suites is an Art Deco style suite designed by Luc Voisin and Mathieu Brison. The “Lapland Waves” suite by Luca Roncoroni reflects the open sea in the heart of Swedish Lapland. The waves of the ocean have frozen into ice with the bed beautifully floats as if buoyed by the gentle touch of the wide open ocean.
Still one of the world’s most unique marvels, the ICEHOTEL is made from ice and snow in Jukkasjärvi, Northern Sweden. It is the world’s first and most magnificent ice hotel according to the Sunday Times, which positioned it amongst the most memorable hotel experiences in the whole world, quite an achievement. It is amazing how much snow is used to build the ICE HOTEL’S 55 rooms, it is equal to 700 million snowballs! There really is no expense spared…the chandeliers alone have over 1000 hand polished ice crystals and are made each year.
5,000 tons of ice from the Torne River are used in March each year to build the hotel from scratch, with a huge amount of dedication from the ice hotel team. The ice is stored until October when the building starts. About 40 artists from every corner of the world gather a few weeks before opening in Jukkasjärvi, northern Sweden to create the 35 unique suites from snow and ice. They also create the amazing guest suites, ICEBAR, the ice chapel, gallery and main hall.
